The Tribeca Film Festival kicked off yesterday in New York City, and among its many, esteemed selections is Intramural, a raucous sports comedy billed as “the lovechild of Dodgeball and Wet Hot American Summer.”
It stars SNL-ers Beck Bennett and Jay Pharaoh, The Office alum Jake Lacey, BriTanick founders Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney, some more
dicks dudes, and — finally, blessedly — the lovely lady lumps of one Miss Kate McKinnon. Also Nikki Reed. So like, pretty sure it passes the Bechdel test.
According to the film’s synopsis:
With graduation, marriage, and an uncertain future on the horizon, fifth year college senior Caleb Fuller (Jake Lacy) decides to do the one thing he vowed to never do again: get the ol’ flag football team back together. Now with the help of his Panther teammates and unorthodox head coach Grant Rosenfalis (Nick Kocher) Caleb must defy all odds and logic if he ever hopes to achieve the intramural football glory he once had.
Will The Panther’s overcome their underdog status to defeat the still dominant Titans led by Dick Downs (Beck Bennett)? Will the wheel chair bound Grant put aside his bitterness towards Caleb and coach the Panthers to a championship? Will Caleb’s fiancé Vicky (Kate McKinnon) get the wedding she’s always dreamed of? Will every sports cliche be twisted around in the most entertaining fashion?
Set in the highly popular world of college intramural sports, INTRAMURAL is the epic sports movie for the guys who don’t deserve one.
And we bet they do it all without a cheap bisexual gag poorly executed by Marcia “Christine Taylor” Brady! Which, let’s be honest, is the only real shortcoming of Dodgeball.
Kate plays the protagonist’s fiance, who gently steers him away from manbabyhood with such subtle molding behaviors as 1) proposing to him, 2) ruthlessly insulting his childish hobbies, and 3) licking his face supportively in lieu of foreplay.
We don’t know what Nikki Reed does, but we did notice that she bears a striking resemblance to Allison Williams, if Allison Williams stopped dieting and grooming her eyebrows, and that feels like an important observation.
Intramural premieres tomorrow night at the Tribeca Film Festival. Check out the trailer below.
